Is 40 Gallons Enough for Your Household?

Forty gallons is the right call for a lot of Utah homes. A couple, a small family of three, or a household with two people who don't overlap their hot water use in the mornings will rarely feel constrained by a 40-gallon tank. What matters as much as tank size is the first-hour rating, which tells you how much hot water is actually available during a peak demand window. A 40-gallon gas unit with a 40,000 BTU burner delivers a first-hour rating around 70 to 77 gallons, which is plenty for most 2 to 3 person households.

A 40-gallon electric unit has a first-hour rating closer to 55 gallons because the elements heat water more slowly than gas flame. That's still workable for smaller households, but in a 4-person home where teenagers are stacking showers before school, you may start to feel the limit. If that's your situation and you already have a gas connection, bumping up to the 50-gallon gas is worth considering.

When You Need Power Vent or Direct Vent at 40 Gallons

Standard 40-gallon gas units use an atmospheric vent — a metal flue pipe that rises through the ceiling or out the wall using natural draft. When your home doesn't have a suitable flue — because the chimney is unavailable, the furnace took over the shared flue, or the space requires horizontal exhaust routing — a power vent unit solves the problem. The Bradford White 40-gallon power vent runs a single PVC exhaust pipe from the unit to an exterior wall, with a small blower motor handling the push.

If your home is tightly sealed — newer construction, spray foam insulation, or an ERV/HRV system — the power direct vent (dual-pipe) goes one step further. It pulls combustion air in through one PVC pipe and exhausts through another, completely isolating the burner from indoor air. This is the sealed-combustion standard and satisfies the most demanding building envelope requirements.

Gas or Electric at 40 Gallons: How to Decide

If there's already a natural gas line and an existing flue vent at the water heater location, gas is almost always the smarter long-term choice. Natural gas in Utah costs less per unit of heat than electricity, and the savings compound over the 10 to 12-year life of the unit. The gas unit also recovers faster after a big demand event. Electric makes more sense when the installation space doesn't have gas service, or in condos and townhomes where running a new gas line and exhaust vent isn't practical.

When the Narrow 18-Inch Model Is the Right Answer

The 40-gallon gas narrow unit exists because some Utah homes simply don't have room for a standard-diameter tank. The 18-inch narrow model provides identical gas performance in a slimmer body. The trade-off is height: the tank is taller to maintain the same 40-gallon capacity. Ceiling clearance becomes the measurement to check rather than floor width.
